The problem: advancing research on a complex groundwater regime with the help of citizens

In Tulum there is a 10 years (2016) long scientific collaboration of the NGO Amigos the Sian Kaan, dedicated to te preservation of the natural and cutural heritage of the region, and the Geological Survey of Austria, namely its department for geophysics, conducting eg. spectacular AEM-helicopter scanning of the hidden groundwater rivers as seen in the image above. The solution: 'public water monitoring'

Extending the input data set for hydrogeological modeling as well as raising public awareness is both achieved by involving the citizens of Tulum in the concept of a public water monitoring network based on citizen science measurement teams, in other words: with essential help of the local population reached through schools, public information events and internet. The implementation and operation of this network is done in close cooperation with the partner Amigos de Sian Kaan.
