Update May 2018

From 19 to 30 March 2018 another stay in Mexico / Tulum took place. During this time, a series of activities and events around the World Water Day 2018 were scheduled, mainly initiated / organized by our partner Amigos de Sian Ka'an in schools and public spaces. The small Citizen Science project was also presented on the occasion. As it turned out, the project's content and objectives fit perfectly into the growing diversity of local activities as an expression of increasing public attention for the groundwater issue in Tulum ...

The solution: 'public water monitoring'

Extending the input data set for hydrogeological modeling as well as raising public awareness is both achieved by involving the citizens of Tulum in the concept of a public water monitoring network based on citizen science measurement teams, in other words: with essential help of the local population reached through schools, public information events and internet. The implementation and operation of this network is done in close cooperation with the partner Amigos de Sian Kaan.

Pupils and interested citizens will be provided basic knowledge and skills to do chemical on-site water analysis with simple, commercially available tests.
The tests are produced by the german company JBL (www.jbl.de)and intended for checking aquariums. But they are also applied in course of world wide expeditions organized by the company.
Since aquarium owners normally are no scientists and not familiar to expensive laboratory equipment the tests are designed for simple learning/handling and error-minimizing which makes them a good choice for field measurements.

The data is then uploaded with a smartphone/tablet/pc via internet to a server in Vienna/Austria and processed at the Geological Survey of Austria. Result maps are published on this website and updated frequentely within few days.
